Our History
WHAT HAS THE ABTF ACHIEVED? The ABTF tries to take measured and thoughtful actions in response to various situations. Over the years, its successes include: an increase from 3% to 18% in the number of minority employees hired by the Town; increased diversity hirings at the local school board and hospital (including multilingual staff and signage); the establishment and support for a coalition of local church and non profit organizations focused on dealing with the working conditions of local day laborers; supporting the fair pay treatment of custodial workers and the need for more minority hiring at the local college (see, for example, The End of the Hamptons); and coordinating, reviewing and defusing numerous volatile local grievances. A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE ABTF Where can you go to find out what’s going on in the Southampton community? How can you help your community? Go to Town Hall 10AM on the first Monday of every month and attend a meeting of the ABTF. Over time you will learn about many of the issues affecting living in the Hamptons: what works and doesn’t work in our schools; how you can help your child succeed; our diverse residents on the East End and the types of biases that impact us all, directly or indirectly; what pending legislation may affect you; what events are planned for the annual Community Picnic; and, what you can do to better the community.
